Legacy themes are Shopify themes built on the original Online Store 1.0 architecture, released before Shopify's major platform update in June 2021. While these themes served millions of merchants well, they lack the flexibility, performance optimisations, and modern features available in Online Store 2.0 themes.
Shopify officially deprecated Online Store 1.0 themes in 2023, meaning they no longer receive updates, security patches, or new feature support. Stores using legacy themes miss out on app blocks, sections everywhere, improved metafields, and significant performance improvements that come standard with OS 2.0.
The five original Shopify-built legacy themes—Debut, Brooklyn, Minimal, Narrative, and Supply—collectively still power nearly 4,000 stores in our database.
